On the 22nd I got to speak to the Temescal Canyon cheerleaders about my breast cancer experience. It was awkward because my cheerleaders are their rivals, but a cheer mom happens to be one of the Bosom Buddies. It was actually a lot harder to tell my story out loud to strangers than I anticipated. Maybe it was nerves. It all seems like it was so long ago, when really my diagnosis was in January 2011, less than six years ago. It was heartwarming to be welcomed into their home, and although they had fewer questions than my own cheerleaders, it was still nice to share the experience aloud again.
I never anticipated that I would be a motivational or inspirational guest speaker for anything. I think the more people realize that this can happen to young people, the better the chances are of catching a dignosis early. I know there is a lot out there for breast cancer awareness, but that's because it's happening to more and more people than ever before. I hope these young girls remember to always be aware of their bodies and take any abnormalities seriously.
