I spoke with Dr. West today (plastic surgeon, not breast surgeon) and he said that he is going to write a letter requesting that based on my reconstruction plan, my Radiation Oncologist should NOT do any "boosts" on me. I asked what a "boost" is, and he said it's basically like setting a microwave on power 1 on my entire breast but setting it to a 10 on one specific area, like a chest bone. He said when they do that, sometimes the incision can burst open, obviously leaving a mess for him to fix. He said that cancer treatment comes first, and if after my CT scan they determine that a boost IS a part of my treatment plan, I may have to change my reconstruction plan a bit. For example, I may not be able to get implants but may have to do a tram flap (where they use fat from my back or other parts of my body). But he said not to stress about it yet because we don't even know if a boost is a part of my plan yet, but I'm glad he was open and honest with me about it. I'm sick of surprises at this point.
I guess I will know soon when my CT scan is scheduled. Once that is scheduled I will know what my radiation plan is about 2-3 days later. Fingers crossed that plan doesn't include any boosts! Meanwhile, I am just waiting for my final expansion on the 1st and preparing for the upcoming school year. August is right around the corner!
